§ 6.01. City Elections Generally.

  • (1)

    Commission Powers. The City Commission, by ordinance and subject to the provisions of the constitution and laws of Florida, Broward County, and this Charter, shall have the power to call for regular and special elections as may be required for the city and to make all necessary regulations for the conduct thereof.

    (2)

    Electors. All citizens qualified by the constitution and laws of Florida to vote in the city, and who satisfy the requirements for registration prescribed by law, shall be qualified electors within the meaning of this Charter.

    (3)

    Number of Votes. Every elector shall be entitled to vote for a candidate for the office of Mayor and to vote for as many candidates of the City Commission as there are members to be elected to the Commission in any given election.

    (4)

    Nonpartisan Elections. All nominations and elections for the offices of Mayor and City Commissioner shall be conducted on a nonpartisan basis without regard for a designation of a political party affiliation for any nominee or any nominating petition or ballot.

    (5)

    Incumbent Candidates. Incumbent elected city officers who become candidates for elected city offices shall be governed by the provisions of the Florida "Resign to Run" law, F.S. Chapter 99.012.

    (6)

    City Employees. Any person who is a city employee or any board member who qualifies as a candidate for an elective city office shall resign his/her position at time of qualifying.
