§ 15-91. Definitions.

  • The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this division, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    B.O.D. (biochemical oxygen demand) means the quantity of oxygen utilized in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter under standard laboratory procedure in five (5) days at twenty (20) degrees Celsius, expressed in parts per million.

    Garbage means solid wastes from the preparation, cooking and dispensing of food and from the handling, storage and sale of produce.

    Industrial wastes means the liquid wastes from industrial processes as distinct from sanitary sewage.

    pH means the logarithm of the reciprocal of the weight of hydrogen ions in grams per liter of solution.

    P.P.M. means parts per million by weight.

    Sanitary sewer means a sewer which carries sewage and to which stormwaters, surface waters and groundwaters are not intentionally admitted.

    Sewage means a combination of the water-carried wastes from dwellings, business buildings, institutions and industrial establishments. In effect, it is the water supply of a community after it has been used and discharged into a sewer.

    Sewage works is a comprehensive term which includes facilities for collecting, pumping, treating and disposing of sewage.

    Storm sewer means a sewer which carries stormwaters and surface waters and drainage, but excludes sewage and polluted industrial wastes.

    Suspended solids means solids that either float on the surface of or are in suspension in water, sewage or other liquids and which are largely removable by laboratory filtering.
